Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced today for the first time that he will run again in the presidential elections scheduled for June 2023.

"I say here, Tayyip Erdogan is the People's Alliance candidate for president," Erdogan told supporters in the Aegean city of Izmir, referring to the electoral alliance with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

Many observers believe next year's election will be one of the most critical in recent Turkish history.

One German media outlet says that after almost 20 years in power, Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) will go to the polls amid a growing currency crisis, a two-decade high inflation rate and rising unemployment. among other problems.

While the opposition also accuses Erdogan of increasing intimidation of potential political rivals in the context of the 2023 elections.

At the same time as announcing his candidacy, Erdogan also called on CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu to announce either his candidacy or the candidacy of someone from the party.

Recently, four other opposition parties joined the CHP and the Iyi party to agree on a strategy to overthrow what they call Erdogan's "authoritarian" rule.

But this alliance has not yet announced its presidential candidate.
