Saudi Arabia may have used its secret missiles for the first time

Saudi Arabia may have used one of its secret arsenal of ballistic missiles in combat for the first time, amid the escalation of the conflict with the Houthis in Yemen.

Footage circulating online shows remains of what appears to be a Chinese DF-15A short-range ballistic missile, found in Marib, Yemen.

Several sources with open-source data have identified the weapon as the DF-15A and suggest it may have been launched by Saudi Arabia.

However, both the identification of the missile and its ownership remain unconfirmed.

A still from a video clearly shows the marking "DF-15A" on the side of the missile.

It is also not known what happened to it during its flight. Debris could indicate that the missile was separated into stages, fragmented, or crashed before reaching its target. The Houthis are not known to have weapons that could have intercepted it.

The development comes at a time of significant escalation in the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. After several years of relative calm following a 2022 ceasefire, fighting has intensified in recent weeks.

Houthi forces have advanced on positions of the Riyadh-backed Yemeni government, including strategic areas around Marib and Taiz. They have also increased missile and drone attacks on southern Saudi Arabia, hitting military and energy infrastructure.

The DF-15, also known by NATO as the CSS-6, is a short-range, solid-fueled, road-mobile ballistic missile developed by China during the 1980s.

The DF-15A reportedly entered Chinese service in the mid-1990s. Estimates for the range of the DF-15 family range from around 600 kilometers for the initial version to 900 kilometers for later variants.

China remains the only confirmed operator of this missile family.

Saudi Arabia has never publicly admitted to possessing the DF-15, but it has a long history of purchasing Chinese ballistic missiles.
