The Tirana Chamber of Commerce and Industry and business associations have issued a joint statement, following numerous cases of vandalism of private businesses by protesters in Tirana.
The statement condemns violence and the destruction of private business premises, while stating that citizens should be free to express their dissatisfaction and demands, but institutions have the responsibility to listen and respond to them through dialogue and concrete actions.
"Businesses, their employees and their properties cannot become targets of political tensions. Behind every enterprise are investments, years of work, jobs and families that provide income from it," the statement said.
Full reaction:
The right to protest must be respected. Violence and destruction of property are unacceptable.
The Tirana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in cooperation with business associations such as: Albanian Agribusiness Council/KASH, Albanian Manufacturing, Albania, Builders Association, Albanian Tourism Association, Dairy Processing Industry Association/IPQ, Albanian Food Industry Association, Medicinal Plants Association and Association of Professional Business and Crafts Women, expresses deep concern about the acts of violence and damage to public and private property during the protests in the capital, including attacks on public institutions, banks, shopping malls, buildings and business representation facilities.
In my capacity as the President of the Tirana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, I emphasize that the right to peacefully protest is a fundamental right of every citizen and an inalienable value of a democratic society. This right must be respected, guaranteed and protected by state institutions. Citizens must be free to express their dissatisfaction and demands, while institutions have the responsibility to listen to them and respond to them through dialogue and concrete actions.
But no cause, grievance or political conflict justifies violence, arson, vandalism and violation of citizens' safety. The destruction of public and private property is unacceptable and must stop.
Businesses, their employees and their properties cannot become targets of political tensions. Behind every enterprise are investments, years of work, jobs and families that provide income from it. Damage to a bank, store, shopping centre or business building affects employees, customers and the city's economy. Likewise, damage to institutions and public property weighs heavily on all taxpayers.
We call on the State Police and responsible institutions to resolutely fulfill their obligation to maintain order, protect life and guarantee the inviolability of public and private property. We demand concrete preventive measures, appropriate presence in endangered areas and timely intervention against any act of violence or destruction.
Police actions must be professional, proportionate and in accordance with the law, ensuring the safety of peaceful protesters, citizens, business employees and the officers themselves. Perpetrators of violence must be identified and held individually accountable according to the law, without collectively blaming every citizen who peacefully exercises their right to protest.
We call on protest organizers and political forces to clearly distance themselves from any act of violence, to call for calm, and to actively contribute to maintaining the peaceful nature of the gatherings. Public responsibility requires language that reduces tensions and actions that prevent escalation.
We also require full documentation of damages and direct communication between the authorities and affected enterprises, to enable reporting, investigation and follow-up of relevant procedures.
The Tirana Chamber of Commerce and Industry is ready to cooperate with institutions to identify business concerns and strengthen protective measures.
Our position is clear and independent of any political affiliation: we support freedom of expression, peaceful protest, dialogue and the rule of law. We oppose without reservation violence and destruction, regardless of who commits them.
Tirana should be a city where citizens protest freely, institutions fulfill their duties, and businesses carry out their activities safely.
Guaranteeing these rights is both the responsibility of the state and the common interest of society.
