From trend to safety problem, China is imposing restrictions on concealed carry gloves

Hidden handles that only pop out when the owner approaches have become a popular feature of electric cars. But the design is now at the center of China's largest car recall, affecting more than 4 million vehicles.

Among them are about 2.98 million Teslas manufactured in China, while the list also includes models from Chinese manufacturers XPeng, Xiaomi and Geely.

The problem is related to security.

Hidden handles can be difficult to open in emergencies, especially after an accident when the car's electrical system may not work.

The issue came to the fore after two fatal accidents in China involving Xiaomi vehicles, where electrical problems allegedly prevented the doors from opening.

Tesla has announced that it is recalling some Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X models, as the handles may be difficult to distinguish and use due to their similar color to the inside of the door.

To prevent problems in the event of an accident, Tesla will place warning labels on affected vehicles and will perform a software update that will automatically lower the windows after a collision.

It is not yet known whether these companies will make the same withdrawal in other countries outside of China.

Chinese authorities have also taken stronger measures. Starting January 1, 2027, new cars sold in China must have a mechanical mechanism for opening the doors from the inside and outside.

Tesla's hidden handles have also been investigated in the US, after cases where they failed to function and left children trapped inside vehicles.
