The renowned European media outlet Euractiv has dedicated an article to the development of the Albanian financial sector, placing Albania in the context of the digital transformation that is changing banking in Europe.
Also in focus of the analysis is Jet Bank, presented as the first fully digital bank without physical branches in the Western Balkans; a model that, according to the cited experts, represents a new development for the Albanian financial market.
According to Elvin Meka, vice-rector and dean at Tirana Business University College, technology gives Albania the opportunity to overcome some traditional stages of banking development. Branchless banking, he says, can contribute simultaneously to financial inclusion and the formalization of the economy.
Euractiv also links this progress to changes taking place at the European level. PSD2 paved the way for open banking and more competition in payment services, while the EU is moving towards PSD3 and the Payment Services Regulation, with the aim of creating a more integrated financial market and a more level playing field for new banks and operators.
MEP Andi Cristea stresses that Europe does not need 27 separate digital banking markets, but a single market. This perspective is particularly important for models like Jet Bank, built from the ground up on digital infrastructure and with the potential to expand beyond the domestic market.
The article also highlights the Albanian banking sector's rapprochement with European standards. According to Mekë, banking is among the most harmonized sectors of the Albanian economy with the EU, while participation in SEPA and the development of open banking create a strong basis for further integration.
In this panorama, Jet Bank is presented by Euractiv as a concrete case of Albania's potential to develop digital banks with real growth opportunities in the region.
