For decades, the Albanian car market has looked towards Europe. Germany and Italy have been the main sources of cars entering the country, mainly used vehicles with diesel engines.
The increase in imports from Asia and, especially, electric vehicles is creating a new alternative for the Albanian buyer: a new car, with modern technology, produced at competitive costs in China, but certified and adapted to the demands of the European market.
In the first six months of 2026, 48.8 thousand vehicles were registered in Albania for the first time, according to data from the General Directorate of Road Transport Services (DPSHTRR). The number increased by 3% compared to the previous year, but within this figure a much stronger transformation is taking place.
About 5,700 of the registered vehicles were electric, or 3.4 times more than in the same period in 2025. Electric vehicles accounted for 11% of new registrations. So, more than one in every ten cars that entered circulation for the first time was electric.
China changes the map of imports
The change is not only related to vehicle technology, but also to their origin.
South Korea led the way in the January-June period with about 12,300 vehicles, or 25% of first-time registrations, dominated by used vehicles. China came in second, with about 8,200 vehicles and 16.9% of the total, mostly new vehicles.
Germany and Italy, the two traditional markets for Albanians, dropped to third and fourth place respectively, with around 5.8 and 5.6 thousand vehicles.
The shift to Asia is primarily a price story. But in the case of China, it is increasingly also about technology. Chinese manufacturers are no longer competing solely in the economy segment. They are entering the market with electric vehicles equipped with advanced batteries, intelligent systems and high levels of comfort.
For the Albanian consumer, this creates a new choice. In contrast to a European car that is several years old, imported as used, a new electric vehicle can now be found in a comparable price range.
BYD, the brand that dominates electric vehicle imports
BYD is the brand that is gaining more ground with the growing interest in electric vehicles. In 2025, the Chinese manufacturer reached nearly 3,500 vehicles sold in Albania, up from only 543 a year earlier. In the first half of 2026 alone, 3,848 vehicles were sold, according to DPSHTRR data. These are vehicles manufactured according to Chinese market standards and not models homologated for the European market.
The growth of around 541% placed the brand at the top of the domestic market in terms of number of units, although so far some of the vehicles have entered through independent imports.
For the consumer, the price difference is not necessarily the deciding factor. A vehicle intended and homologated for the European market may cost somewhat more, but in return it offers higher safety standards, certified driving assistance systems, compliance with European charging and data protection requirements, and more security for the long-term use of the vehicle.
In this perspective, a somewhat higher price can be justified by the difference in standard, safety and service. For a buyer, saving at the time of purchase does not necessarily have the same value as the certainty that the vehicle is homologated according to EU requirements, will continue to receive updates and is supported by a warranty recognized even outside Albania.
The prices and models that BYD will officially offer in Albania have not yet been made public. The advantage of the official entry will depend not only on the price, but also on the ability to combine the competitive cost of Chinese production with European safety standards, warranty, updates and after-sales service.
This could also change the way consumers compare alternatives in the market. When faced with a choice between a used European vehicle and a new Chinese electric car, the comparison will not only be based on purchase price, but also on safety, technology, warranty, maintenance costs and lifespan.
With around 1.1 million vehicles on the road, Albania is still far from a full electric transition. But this year's registrations, the increase in imports from China and the official entry of BYD show that the balance is starting to shift. (Monitor)
