"Rich" tourists in Albania? They brought in a record 2.38 billion

The country's return to a preferred tourist destination has also increased the income that foreign citizens spend when they come to Albania. Although everyone complains that the country is full of "cheap" tourists who are not willing to spend much, their high number still translates into more foreign currency in the country.

On the other hand, Albanians' spending abroad has increased at a slower pace.

Bank of Albania balance of payments data shows that in the first 6 months of 2026, the spending of foreigners who traveled to Albania totaled 2.38 billion euros.

This is the highest figure ever recorded after the 1990s for the first 6 months. Foreigners' travel spending increased by 13.4% compared to the same period a year ago.

Other INSTAT data revealed that in the first six months of the year, nearly 5.1 million foreign citizens entered the country, with an increase of 6.2%, compared to the same period a year earlier.

After a weak start in the first months, due to unfavorable weather, tourism revived in the following period, peaking in May with 16% more arrivals, only to slow down again in June (1.8%). Citizens from Kosovo continue to hold the lead, accounting for about a third of arrivals, followed by Italians, with about 11% of the total.

According to data from the Bank of Albania on total expenditures and INSTAT on the number of entries, it turns out that a foreign citizen spent an average of 470 euros per person in Albania in the first 6 months of 2026, up from 440 euros in the same period a year earlier.

Albanians abroad are not spared either.

The addition of low-cost direct flights from Rinas, or the increase in costs in the country, is causing many Albanians to choose to travel abroad.

According to data from the Bank of Albania, for the first six months of the year, Albanians' spending on travel abroad was 1.4 billion euros, an increase of 9.5% compared to the same period a year earlier.

According to INSTAT data, in the first six months of the year, almost 4.2 million Albanian citizens traveled abroad, an increase of 5.1% compared to the same period a year earlier. The average spending of an Albanian abroad is around 340 euros.

The country has 957 million euros left from tourism.

Although foreigners have increased their spending in Albania, the same has happened to Albanian citizens traveling abroad.

However, more money has remained in the country. According to the Bank of Albania, the travel balance, which measures the difference between the spending of foreigners in Albania and Albanians abroad, was 957 million euros in the first half of the year, approaching the 1 billion euro mark.

Since 2015, Albania has had a positive balance of travel, which has been increasing year after year, reaching a historic record in the first 6 months of the year.
