The British media DailyMail continues to echo the issue of Albanian immigrants who enter illegally by crossing the English Channel in dinghies and try to stay on the island using the law for trafficked asylum seekers.
After publishing intelligence data showing that 40% of migrants seeking asylum in recent months had been from Albania, the DailyMail has today revealed that more than 4,000 Albanians have reached Britain through the Channel this year.
Ministers fear that rising numbers of asylum seekers will push this year's number of small boat arrivals past the record 28,500 reached in 2021.
The unprecedented surge in Albanian arrivals is due to new tactics by human-trafficking gangs in the Balkans and weaknesses in Britain's 'modern slavery' laws, sources told British media.
Once they arrive in Great Britain, Albanians claim that they have been trafficked or exploited, making it more difficult for them to leave.
"This year we had 4,000 people from Albania who have already arrived. We are seeing this increase from Albania, because they pay more and are guaranteed passage from smugglers, as others do not. People coming to the UK often try to prevent removal by making a claim under modern slavery laws," said a source close to Home Secretary Priti Patel.
Meanwhile, figures were released two days ago revealing that 20,000 migrants have reached British soil this year by boat, a historic and worrying figure that was not reached last year until early November.
"This means that Albanians have made up one in five of those crossing the Channel since the beginning of January", the article further underlines.
In a 6-week period in June and July, 1,075 Albanians arrived in small boats, almost one in four of the total for this period.
"A significant part of the Albanian arrivals end up committing crimes, in a kind of "revolving door" in the prisons of the United Kingdom", added the source from the British Home Office.
An agreement with Albania, signed by Patel in July 2021, has led to an increase in the number of criminals sent home, with the Interior Ministry currently having a departure flight to Tirana almost every week.
But the flow through the Channel far exceeds the numbers leaving. The National Crime Agency is working with local police in Albania to prevent people heading to Britain and cracking down on smuggling gangs.
