The Albanian Football Federation has decided to withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino's candidacy for a new four-year term at the head of FIFA.
Through an official letter addressed to FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström, the Albanian Football Association (AFHA) has announced the revocation of the support previously given for the candidacy of the current president of the world football organization.
The decision was made after further internal consultations and a review of the situation, as stated in the letter signed by the president of the Albanian Football Association, Armand Duka.
"After further internal consultations and a careful review of the situation, the Albanian Football Federation has decided to withdraw the support previously given for the candidacy of Mr. Infantino," the AFF statement said.
The Albanian Federation links this decision to recent developments in international football and to the positions expressed by the European federation regarding FIFA's governance processes.
In its statement, the Albanian Football Association also emphasizes that it remains committed to working closely with UEFA and its international partners, with the aim of supporting a football governance based on transparency, integrity and the best interest of the game.
The withdrawal of support from Albania comes at a time when Gianni Infantino's leadership is facing criticism and strong positions from within European football, making the race for the FIFA presidency increasingly controversial.
This, following his plans to sell the World Cup rights, which would bring Infantino $30 million a year.
What remains interesting, however, is the fact that Armando Duka is one of the first presidents to come out against Infantino, after Wales and Britain.
This comes, in fact, for other reasons, not for issues of principles and integrity, as the AFF states.
But for the simple reason that the Duke has strong ties to UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.
The latter has openly come out against Infantino, declaring war on the head of FIFA.
We recall that Duka was elected vice-president of UEFA and received the strong support of Ceferin, in his most difficult moments, when he had a fierce battle with the majority and Erion Veliaj, to be re-elected as head of the Albanian Football Association.
And apparently, he is now returning the favor to Ceferin, offering himself up in the latter's battle with the head of FIFA.
