Tensions at Rama's meeting with mayors - He throws out Dimal's from

Prime Minister Edi Rama's meeting with socialist mayors on territorial reform was accompanied by strong debates and clashes between the head of government and the leaders of several municipalities that are expected to be affected by the map reorganization.

The meeting, held in Kuç, Vlora, and lasting about four hours, focused on the municipalities of Poliçan, Dimal, Selenica and Divjaka, for which the possibility of merging or unifying with other local units is being discussed.

One of the strongest clashes occurred between Rama and the mayor of Poliçan, Adriatik Zotkaj, who left the meeting after the debate with the prime minister.

According to sources, Rama addressed Zotkaj, telling him that he should not have been at the meeting at all and harshly criticized the previous protest in Poliçan, where Socialist Party cards were burned.

"You shouldn't have been here at all. What Poliçani did by burning the cards was an act of impudence," Rama is reported to have said to the mayor of Poliçani.

Zotkaj, who has publicly opposed the merger of the Municipality of Poliçan, responded by defending the community's position and linking the protest to dissatisfaction with the government.

"The community responded to the ungrateful actions of the SP and the prime minister. If there is any ungratefulness, it is that of the SP," Zotkaj is reported to have declared.

Another clash has been recorded between Prime Minister Rama and the Mayor of Dimal, Juliana Memaj.

According to reported sources, Rama addressed Memaj with irony during the discussion.

"You great leaders," the prime minister is said to have said.

Memaj has reacted by opposing the way in which, according to her, local government and the competencies of municipalities are being treated.

"What a black leader! We have become like municipal workers," she responded, referring to the lack of competences of local government.

After this clash, according to sources cited by Report TV, Rama decided to remove Memaj from the meeting.

There were also debates with the mayors of Selenica and Divjaka, Nertil Bello and Josif Gorrea, who opposed the arguments for merging the municipalities they lead.

Bello and Gorrea have defended the position that their local units have the capacity to continue functioning and have requested that decision-making on the new territorial map not be based solely on certain economic or financial indicators.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Rama has claimed that the leaders of these municipalities are inciting communities against territorial reform.

Mayors have also raised allegations of double standards in the selection of municipalities that will be affected by the reform.

According to them, municipalities such as Peqin, Vau i Dejës or Roskovec have poor performance indicators, but are not expected to lose their municipal status.

The meeting only discussed territorial reform and how the local government map will be reorganized.

Meanwhile, several municipalities, including Maliqi and Këlcyra, have not expressed opposition to the way they are expected to be positioned on the new territorial map.

The meeting held in Kuç, Vlora, was attended by the mayors of municipalities affected by possible changes to the territorial map, as well as the mayors of the district center municipalities.
