He confronted a gunman, managing to stop him along with his colleague, but now the police officer is fighting for his life.

Jakub Kulik, one of two police officers who intervened during the massacre in Krakow, Poland, has been hospitalized in critical condition after being shot three times.

Polish Justice Minister Waldemar Zurek has launched an appeal for blood donations, which are needed for the officer's treatment. In addition to him, sergeant Artur Morański was also injured and is in serious condition.

"Officer Jakub Kulik, who ruthlessly confronted an armed attacker, is fighting for his life in hospital. He has a damaged lung and needs every drop of blood. Blood type AB Rh+ is needed. If it weren't for them, the death toll in the Krakow massacre would have been unimaginable. They confronted a terrorist armed with an automatic weapon, returned fire and stopped the killer by protecting themselves with their bodies. One of them is fighting for his life in hospital after being hit by three bullets; the other was also wounded. Their heroism knows no bounds," said Zurek.

The tragedy has brought the death toll to nine, with six people killed in the shooting in the main square and three others found dead in the attacker's home.
