Zelensky orders the evacuation of residents from Donetsk

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has announced that the Government has decided to order the mandatory evacuation of residents from the Donetsk region, which is the scene of intense fighting with the Russian occupation forces.

During an address in the late hours of July 30, Zelensky said that hundreds of thousands of people are still in the war zones in the Donbass region and that they must leave.

"The more people who leave Donetsk now, the less people the Russian army will have time to kill," he said, adding that residents who will be evacuated will be compensated.

Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk is quoted as saying that the evacuation must take place before the winter season begins, as natural gas supplies in the region have been destroyed.

Zelensky said that hundreds of thousands of people continue to live in areas of Donbas where fierce fighting is taking place.

"Most are refusing to leave, but this has to happen," he said.

Russia launched the unprovoked break of Ukraine on February 24. After failing to take control of Kiev, Moscow focused its offensive on the Donbas region, which consists of Donetsk and Luhansk. In addition to this region, fierce fighting is also taking place in the south of Ukraine, namely in the Kherson region
