President Joe Biden tested positive for Covid 19 again on Saturday, just over three days after emerging from coronavirus isolation, the White House said, in a rare case of "re-infection" after treatment with an antiviral drug.

The White House physician, Dr. Kevin O'Connor said in a letter that President Biden "has not experienced a recurrence of symptoms and continues to feel quite well." Dr. O'Connor said that "there is no reason to restart treatment at this time."

President Biden wrote on social media that he tested positive again, something that rarely happens.

"I have no symptoms, but I will isolate myself for the safety of everyone around me," he wrote, emphasizing that he is still at work.

In accordance with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, President Biden will be in isolation for at least five days. He will be isolated in the White House until he tests negative. The agency says most cases of resurgence of infection remain mild and that no serious illnesses have been reported during that period.

The announcement that the president tested positive came just two hours after the White House announced a visit to Michigan on Tuesday to highlight the passage of a bill to boost domestic high-tech manufacturing. President Biden was also scheduled to visit his home in Wilmington, Delaware, on Sunday morning, where first lady Jill Biden has been staying while the president tested positive. Both trips have been cancelled.

President Biden, 79, was treated with the antiviral drug Paxlovid after first testing positive on July 21.
