Prominent British anti-Albanian politician accused of taking £5 million

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has received a personal gift of £5 million from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne shortly before announcing his candidacy in the 2024 British general election, The Guardian newspaper reveals.

Farage had initially stated that he would not stand as an MP, but changed his mind in June 2024, just weeks after receiving this gift from the Thailand-based businessman.

The Guardian writes that, in July 2024, Farage first became an MP and has subsequently expressed the expectation that he could become prime minister in the next election.

When contacted by the Guardian about the gift, neither Farage nor Harborne would comment directly. Lawyers for Reform UK and Harborne asked for more time to respond. Farage later confirmed to the Daily Telegraph that he had received the gift, adding that the money was for his personal security.

At the time, Farage was not yet an MP, so he did not need to declare the gift to parliamentary authorities. He had not even declared his candidacy for the seat of Clacton-on-Sea, so it was not clear whether he had to notify the Electoral Commission.

Harborne, who has donated a total of £12m to Reform UK in 2025, including £9m last year, is one of the most important financial figures in British politics, personally supporting Farage and the parties he has led.

On 23 May 2024, Farage announced that he would not stand in the July election, ending speculation that he would make an eighth attempt to enter Parliament. He explained that he wanted to focus on his campaign for the US presidential election and that his political career had been a financial burden for him.

However, on 3 June, he announced that he would stand for Clacton, Essex, and that he would remain leader of Reform UK for the next five years. Farage has stated that he had not promised anything in return for the gift and that Harborne was not asking for anything from him.

Farage has experienced difficult financial times in the past, including losing the ability to hold luxury accounts at Coutts in 2023. His relationship with Harborne dates back many years, including large donations to the Brexit Party and to Boris Johnson, influencing British politics through direct financial support.

Farage explained to the Telegraph that the £5m was for his personal security, as he could not rely on state assistance. He stressed that it was entirely up to him and that Harborne was a committed supporter who had deep concerns for his safety.

This case could heighten debates over the need for more transparency in MPs' finances and the influence of private donations in British politics, especially before taking office as an MP.
