Official figures: US war on Iran has cost $25 billion so far

The United States' war against Iran has so far cost about $25 billion, according to a first official estimate made public by a senior Pentagon official.

The figure was revealed during testimony to the House Armed Services Committee, where the acting finance officer, Jules Hurst, explained that the bulk of the costs are related to ammunition used in military operations, Reuters reports.

However, he did not provide details on whether this amount also includes future costs for rebuilding and repairing military bases in the Middle East, damaged during the conflict.

The reaction from lawmakers was not lacking. Democratic Rep. Adam Smith, one of the key figures on the committee, said: "I'm glad we finally got an answer, because we've been looking for this number for a long time."

The conflict, which began on February 28, currently continues under a fragile ceasefire, while the US has deployed tens of thousands of additional troops to the region and has kept three aircraft carriers in the Middle East.

The human toll for the US includes 13 soldiers killed and hundreds wounded.

Meanwhile, the war has also had a direct impact on the economy. Disruptions to oil and gas supplies have led to rising prices for fuel and agricultural products, adding to the pressure on American consumers.

These developments are also being reflected in public opinion. According to recent polls, support for the conflict has fallen sharply, negatively affecting Donald Trump's popularity as the country approaches the midterm elections.
