Harrowing footage depicts the rampant drug addiction that has hit thousands of Afghan families after the long conflict with the Taliban.

Thousands of people, users of heroin, opium and methamphetamine, were photographed on a hill overlooking Kabul, some in makeshift tents and many others lying on the ground.

But it doesn't stop there, with tens and hundreds of dogs moving in the area to eat, but also addicted to drugs.

Drug addiction has long been a worrying phenomenon in Afghanistan, which is the world's largest producer of opium and heroin, but extreme poverty resulting from decades of war has led millions more to use of drugs.

A 2015 study by the UN concluded that 2.3 million people had used drugs that year, which corresponds to about 5 percent of the entire population.

Now, 7 years later, the number is unclear, but it is believed that the situation has worsened dramatically, according to the director of a department that deals with the management of the situation of drug users in the country.
