The Italian prime minister has pulled back from his resignation, calling for a new pact to save his government from collapse.

Six days after the President rejected his resignation, Draghi said it was impossible to ignore the calls of many Italians demanding "the survival of the coalition".

He said in the Italian Senate that "a completely new agreement would be the only way to stay together. We need a new, honest and concrete pact: are you ready?", Draghi addressed him. The prime minister has been leading the government for 18 months and was due to resign next year before elections.

But he resigned last Thursday after a key member of the coalition, Five Star, pulled out of a confidence vote over political disagreements and sparked a political crisis.
