The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded this year to the Iranian women's rights activist, Narges Mohammadi.
According to the Committee, Mohammad was awarded the prize for the work she has done in the fight against the oppression of women in Iran and for the efforts she has made to promote human rights and freedom.

Narges Mohammadi is also the vice president of the Human Rights Defenders Center, which was founded by her colleague, Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi.

Mohammadi has received several prison terms since 2011 and is currently being held in Tehran's notorious Evin prison for "spreading propaganda".

The Nobel Committee, after awarding the prize to the Iranian activist, argued that "Mohammad's courageous struggle has come at an extraordinary personal cost to her. "

"In all, the regime has arrested him 13 times, convicted him five times and sentenced him to 31 years in prison," said Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo.

Narges Mohammadi is "still in prison as we speak", she added.

Last year's prize was won by human rights activists from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, in what was seen as a strong rebuke to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart and ally, Alexander Lukashenko.

What do Nobel laureates get?

This year's winner will receive a prize of 11 million Swedish Krona, equivalent to nearly one million US dollars. An increase of 10% from last year's amount.

The winner will also be awarded a certificate and one of the Nobel Committee's iconic 18-carat gold medals.

The obverse of the medal shows the profile of the founder Alfred Nobel.
