Gas restriction from Russia: Measurement of forces

In recent days Gazprom has reduced gas supplies to Germany and Europe. It is a well-known practice that Russia is reducing supplies, says German Economy Minister Robert Habeck. He calls for energy to be saved.

Problems in gas supply from Russia continue. After Germany, other countries have also announced a reduction in gas supplies from Russia. The Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria report irregularities in Russian gas supplies. France was also informed on Friday that it was not supplied with gas by Gazprom. The Italian concern, ENI announced that it currently receives 65% of the amount of gas from Gazprom. According to the Russian ambassador to the EU, there may even be a complete interruption of gas supply through Nord Stream1, due to works on the pipeline.

Habeck: must react wisely

For German Economy Minister Robert Habeck this reason is put at the top to "keep the price of gas high and to reduce the amount of gas step by step. According to Habeck, the way Gazprom operates, which once again reduced the amount of supply on Thursday via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline in Germany, is part of a practice that has been observed for several weeks. The bitter truth is that Germany is still dependent on Russian gas, Habeck said, according to Reuters.

But the German Economy Minister does not see a direct link between the visit to Kiev of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the reduction of gas supplies. There is "a lot of politics" in what Gazprom has reduced gas supplies, Habeck said during a visit to Bremerhaven, but he does not see a direct link to the visit of three European leaders, Scholz, Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi to Kiev. . "If there really is a direct link to an acute case, that would be pure speculation. That includes the technical terms of Nord Stream 1."

Save energy

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck has called on German firms and citizens to save energy. Gas supply is still secured soon, despite the recent cuts in supply through Gazprom, Habeck told ARD Television in the "tagesthemen". But for this situation to remain so it is good that supply reserves are replenished in winter. He called on citizens to save. If the reserves are not replenished above the average, in case of emergency, gas savings should be established by law. This is not necessary at the moment. With currently 56% the reserves are well filled, although the situation has worsened.

Regarding the requests of the Association of Housing Enterprises to reduce the temperature provided by law in rented apartments, from 20-22 degrees currently to 18 and 16 degrees at night, in case there is a lack of gas in Germany, there was no response from German Minister of Economy, Robert Habeck. The government has not dealt with this issue. If there is a shortage of gas in the winter, then the first step would be for the power plants to be put into operation with coal and not gas, said Habeck, for which preparations are being made. "But that does not mean we are unprotected," Habeck said. In addition to gas reserves, he also referred to LNG terminals currently under construction and new agreements with gas suppliers.

Gazprom had cited delays in maintenance work as reasons for reducing supplies. Works are needed, which are carried out mainly from Canada, this variant of the Russian side is correct. "But the technical situation does not necessarily lead to the consequences we are seeing," Habeck said.
