US authorizes anticovid vaccine for 6-month-old babies

A panel of experts at the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Saturday voted to recommend COVID-19 vaccines for children up to six months old, calling for the process to begin as early as next week.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday authorized Moderna's vaccine for children between six months and 5 years old and the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children aged six months to 4 years old. Pfizer's vaccine is already authorized for children over the age of 5.

President Joe Biden's administration plans to distribute vaccines to under-5 age groups next week.

Many parents in the United States have called for their children to be vaccinated, but it's unclear how big the demand for vaccines will be.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was authorized for children aged 5 to 11 in October, but only about 29 percent of this group so far is fully vaccinated, federal data show.
