A declassified US intelligence report has found that the war in Ukraine has cost Russia 315,000 dead and wounded, or more than 80 percent of the troops it had when the conflict began, an intelligence source said Tuesday.
The report also estimated that Moscow's losses in personnel and armored vehicles in the war with the Ukrainian military have set back the modernization of the Russian military by 18 years, according to the source.
The Russian Embassy and the Russian Defense Ministry did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.
Russian officials have said the West inflates the number of Russian troops killed in the war in its estimates and that it almost always downplays Ukraine's losses in the war — which Russian officials say are huge.
The source said that a recently declassified US intelligence report estimated that Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 with 360,000 troops.
Since then, according to the report, 315,000 Russian troops, or about 87% of the total number with which it started the war, have been killed or wounded, the source said.
The heavy losses, according to the source, are why Russia has been forced to ease recruitment standards and conscript prison sentences and elderly civilians to fight in Ukraine.
"The scale of losses has forced Russia to take extraordinary measures to maintain its ability to fight. Russia announced a mobilization of 300,000 troops by the end of 2022, and has eased standards to enable the recruitment of convicts and elderly civilians, the report found, according to the source.
The Russian army has only 1,300 armored vehicles left on the battlefield and now needs to reinforce its military forces with T62 tanks produced in the 1970s, the source said.
