The first court hearing for the trial of 104 members of the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK) took place on Tuesday with five lawyers representing the accused

Iran held the first court hearing on Tuesday to try 104 members of the "terrorist group" Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) in absentia, the Iranian Student News Agency (ISNA) reported.

The hearing, presided over by Judge Amir-Reza Dehqani-Nia, was held by the Tehran Criminal Court in the Iranian capital, the report said.

According to the indictment in the case, the defendants are accused of violating Iran's law, refusing to hand over their weapons to Iranian authorities after the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution, illegally infiltrating state organizations and apparatuses, and harboring enmity against the people. of Iran and the Islamic establishment, and the killing of thousands of Iranians in acts of terror, one of which targeted the headquarters of the Islamic Republic Party in 1981 that killed at least 74 government officials.

According to ISNA, the court will hold its next session on December 19.

In late August, Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's deputy chief justice for international affairs, said public defenders would be appointed by the court to try MKO members, including group leader Maryam Rajavi.

He added that despite MKO's "many crimes", the court had previously told the defendants to hire their own lawyers through newspaper notices. However, the deadline had passed without hiring a lawyer, so the court appointed public defenders for them.

Iran labels MKO a terrorist organization, accusing it of killing tens of thousands of Iranian citizens. The group is currently located in Albania.
