A search and chase operation involving a British Royal Navy warship and helicopter searching for a Russian submarine has taken place off the coast of Ireland.

According to the Irish Examiner, which cites sources in the Irish military, the Russian submarine was hiding on the coast just meters from the entrance to Cork Harbor and was on a spying mission for Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.

The dramatic underwater incident took place six months ago and it is suspected that the purpose of the Russian mission was to closely study the weaknesses in the western flank of British defences.

It is also said that the submarine was accompanied by a civilian vessel registered in Russia, which provided "surface surveillance". Irish media sources have also revealed that a British helicopter in complete darkness dropped sonar equipment into the water.

Soon after, a Royal Navy anti-submarine frigate allegedly arrived in the area to monitor the Russian submarine's movements and followed the potential threat every step of the way.

Although more than provocative, this move by Russia with the submarine hidden in the coastal border of 12 miles, has not violated any international law.

But military sources have revealed that such incidents on the Irish coast are becoming commonplace. They suggest that Russia is working to find potential weaknesses in British defense systems after discovering that the UK is vulnerable on its water borders with Ireland.

Thus, the Republic of Ireland Navy also lacks sonar capabilities, meaning they are less able to effectively detect incoming underwater threats.

Ireland also lacks fighter jets to monitor even the Soviet-era Tu-95, as the existing jets lack the speed and altitude to match the Russian ones.

The revelation comes as Putin's offensive in Ukraine has raised fears about the vulnerability of the UK and the rest of Europe's critical defense infrastructure.

A joint investigation by Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway in April revealed that Russia is using civilian vessels to gather intelligence in the North Sea. They tracked dozens of Russian research and fishing vessels that passed by oil and gas fields, wind farms, power panels and military training areas.
