Serbia has emerged as a new lead in the investigation into the attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle airport, as German authorities are verifying possible links between the suspects and other cases of sabotage.

According to the German newspaper Der Spiegel, one of the suspects in the Leipzig attack traveled to Serbia after the incident.

According to information cited by Der Spiegel, German authorities are also examining the connection between the Leipzig case and a suspected operation on the Serbian-Hungarian border.

On June 11, Serbian authorities arrested two people near the border with Hungary. In their vehicles, components of a modified drone, transmitters for its control, and explosives placed in tin cans were found. Investigators are examining whether the components have similarities to the drone found near a Ukrainian plane at Leipzig airport.

The two arrested, a Serbian citizen and a person with Serbian and Russian citizenship, are in custody, while German authorities are investigating their possible contacts with the people involved in the Leipzig case.

Serbia, a "hotspot" for Russian operations?

Der Spiegel reports, citing security sources, that Western intelligence services consider Serbia a "hotspot" for Russian sabotage operations in Europe, including the recruitment and training of people who could be used by Russian services.

Another element of the investigation is the fact that one of the suspects in the Leipzig attack is suspected of having passed through Serbia and Istanbul towards Russia.

The German government has said that the attempted drone attack in Leipzig was carried out by individuals acting on behalf of Russian state structures. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the case as part of a pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe.

Moscow has denied the accusations and described them as unfounded.

Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the links to Serbia and other sabotage cases are part of the same network.
