The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha , has published a graph on the performance of the euro-lek exchange rate, through which he refutes the claim that the depreciation of the European currency in Albania is a consequence of the increase in the number of tourists.
According to him, the main cause of the euro's decline is related to the activity of drug cartels and the money they inject into the Albanian economy.
In a statement, Berisha cited the years 2007 and 2022 as examples, comparing the number of tourists with the exchange rate. According to the figures he presented, in 2007 Albania had around 1.8 million tourists, while one euro was exchanged for around 120 lekë.
Meanwhile, in 2022, when the number of tourists, according to official statistics, reached about 9 million, the euro was exchanged for about 127 lek.
Based on this comparison, the DP leader claims that the increase in tourist flows cannot be the explanation for the strong depreciation of the euro in recent years.
He accused the government and financial institutions of using tourism as an excuse to hide what he described as the "narco-Euro" phenomenon.
According to him, the strongest depreciation was observed from 2022 onwards, a period during which, Berisha claims, Albanian drug cartels have expanded their influence in the European cocaine market and increased financial activity.
"With all 9 million tourists in Albania, the euro was converted at 127 lekë, so it was stronger than in 2007, when it was converted at 120 lekë," Berisha declared.
He described the fall of the euro as a dramatic development for the Albanian economy and society, accusing institutions of silence in the face of the phenomenon.
"Silence in the face of this monstrous crime against the economy and the pockets of Albanians is complicity, it is support for this development," concluded the leader of the Democratic Party.
Berisha claims that the depreciation of the euro is related to money flows from criminal activity, while rejecting the explanation that tourism is the main factor that has influenced the exchange rate.
