A serial thief has been sentenced to three years in prison after stealing the handbag of former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem during a family dinner in Washington DC.
The incident occurred in April of last year, when Noem was dining at a popular restaurant in the US capital. Her Gucci handbag contained about $3,000 in cash, as well as important personal documents, including her driver's license, passport and DHS access card.
The perpetrator, Mario Bustamante Leiva, 50, originally from Chile, was unaware he was targeting a high-ranking official, prosecutors said. According to the Justice Department, he had entered the United States illegally and had committed a series of similar robberies.
In November, Bustamante Leiva pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud and one count of first-degree theft. After completing his sentence, he is expected to be deported.
Investigations revealed that the perpetrator used a sophisticated method to conceal his actions, covering his hand with a coat during the theft. He also carried out transactions with the stolen cards within minutes.
Authorities were able to identify him through a gift card he had purchased with a stolen credit card. Noem's bag was later found in his motel room.
The case was investigated by police in cooperation with the Secret Service, as Noem, as a cabinet member at the time, was under their protection during the incident.
