Two girls died after the "blackout challenge", parents sue TikTok

Tik Tok has been sued by the families of two little girls who died as a result of one of the platform's challenges. The two girls, 8 and 9 years old, lost their lives while doing the "blackout challenge", which went viral last year and involved suffocating themselves until they lost consciousness.

The families have stated that the platform's dangerous algorithm is to blame for the children's deaths. According to them, the algorithm deliberately and repetitively displayed videos from the challenge on homepages to encourage them to take part in it, while it took its life.

In the document filed, they are seeking damages, which have not yet been disclosed in figures, and a trial to be held in California.

8-year-old Lalani Erika Renee Walton from Texas died on July 8, 2021 and according to the police investigation, the cause was "blackout challenge". "Lalani got a cell phone for her birthday in April 2021 and became obsessed with watching Tik Tok videos. She often posted videos of herself singing and dancing, hoping to become famous. She believed that by trying the 'blackout challenge' she would become one and decided to do it," the lawsuit reads.

Another victim, 9-year-old Arriani Jaileen Arroyo, was also given a mobile phone on her seventh birthday and gradually became "addicted to the app". On February 26, 2021, Arroyo was found unconscious by her 5-year-old brother and could not be revived.

The lawsuit also states that Tik Tok's algorithm promotes harmful content, allows minors to have an account, and fails to warn users or their legal guardians about the app's addiction.

The issue open to the social platform for the 'blackout challenge' is not the first. In May, the mother of a 10-year-old girl who participated in the dangerous challenge and drowned herself filed a lawsuit against Tik Tok and its parent company, ByteDance.
