After banning executions since 2015, the US state of Oklahoma has planned to carry out 25 executions in the next 29 months, starting in August.

The state currently has 44 people awaiting execution, and the decision to publish the calendar — which sees one person executed per month — was made at the request of the state's attorney general.

The several-year moratorium was established because during an execution, through injection, the convict had suffered for over 40 minutes before dying of a heart attack. According to experts, this happened because of one of the ingredients in the injection.

The decision is expected to place Oklahoma at the center of the US death penalty debate. According to some of the lawyers of the convicted persons, a good part of them hope to get a pardon from the governor of the state, as they claim great problems with the trial of their cases.

In the United States, the death penalty is a legal punishment in 27 states, of which only 20 have no moratoriums. The US is the only Western country that applies the death penalty and, along with Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, are the only democratic countries that do so.
