Jakup Krasniqi 's wife , Sevdije Krasniqi , has commented on her experiences before and during the Hague verdict for the former KLA leaders. She told Top Channel that they awaited the verdict at home and that they had hoped that everyone would be declared innocent, calling it a 'shocking decision'.
"We had hoped that they would all be declared innocent. We awaited the decision at home. The moment of the decision was shocking, we did not expect it. Who are those 4 people who are being sentenced? They are the leaders of the KLA. History will not be poisoned by any decision. The KLA fought for freedom. This decision neither affects nor should it affect the life of Kosovo," she said.
Following the decision of the Special Court in The Hague, Sevdije Krasniqi said that the family members will await the appeal process, while demanding the release of the former KLA leaders.
"We demand their release, we will wait for the Appeal. I believe that now they will be based on the facts. It is now known that the joint criminal enterprise is the leadership of Serbia together with the judges of the Special Court who issued this decision," she said.
The wife of the former KLA leader, Jakup Krasniqi, has also spoken about their relationship, history and how they met. She said that their acquaintance began through a friend, who had told her about Krasniqi and encouraged her to wait for him after he was released from prison.
"A friend of mine proposed to me and said: 'It's worth waiting for Professor Jakupi.' I waited for him and, after he came out, we got together. I told Jakupi that I didn't come to you in prison then, but I will come to you in The Hague every month...", she says.
Sevdije describes Jakupi's absence as the most difficult part she has had to experience.
"I experienced it very hard when we had joys at home, which he was unable to experience," she says, while also recounting the plans they had for life after The Hague.
"We were waiting for him at home, we had made plans. Jakupi and I had even said that we would both run away to live in a house in the village," says Sevdije.
Regarding the process and the Court, she indicates that Jakupi had expressed doubts, mainly about the manner of arrest, as they could have surrendered themselves.
"Seeing how things went, he said: 'I don't really believe it, because it's a racist court,' from the way they arrested us, when he himself could have surrendered. So, an arrest like in the former Yugoslavia, even more severe," she said.
Following the decision of the Special Court in The Hague, Sevdije Krasniqi's hopes are now on the appeal process. She calls for all legal possibilities and means to be used to challenge the decision, while at the end she also reveals the message she conveys to Jakupi.
"We demand that all legal means be used to overturn this court. We are hoping for an appeal. This court should no longer have the right to deal with our fighters. We have faced genocide... I tell Jakupi to stay strong, just as he is," she said.
The Hague court found Jakup Krasniqi guilty of several war crimes charges, while acquitting him of crimes against humanity. Krasniqi, like Thaçi, was sentenced to 25 years in prison. During the verdict, the panel declared that Krasniqi is guilty of the unlawful arrest and detention of 385 people, cruel treatment as a war crime against 49 people, torture as a war crime against 49 people, and unlawful killing of 96 people.
Four former KLA leaders have been sentenced to a total of 81 years in prison by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague. Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi was sentenced to 25 years in prison, former Assembly Speaker Kadri Veseli to 18 years, Rexhep Selimi to 13 years, and Jakup Krasniqi to 25 years in prison.
