60 years after 3 men made one of the most spectacular escapes from the infamous Alcatraz prison in the United States, the American Marshals have published their photos, guessing how they might look already in their 90s.
Clarence Anglin, John Anglin and Frank Morris remain wanted persons since June 11, 1962, when they managed to get out of prison cells on the island, in the San Francisco area. They were convicted of armed robbery of a bank.
The three men planned the escape for more than a year, opening a tunnel in the ventilation hole of their cells, until they managed to cross. Once the guards managed to pass, their plan was to leave the island by boat.
The FBI investigations concluded that the three fugitives - whose story is told in Clint Eastwood's 1979 film Escape From Alcatraz - must have drowned in nearby San Pablo Bay. But for years it has been speculated that they may have survived and continued to live in secret. The fact that their bodies were never found and the denunciation of a car robbery in San Francisco that night has helped support these theories.
In 2013, authorities received a letter claiming to have been written by one of the fugitives, John Anglin. He wrote that he was still alive, with cancer and that he needed help. Officially, the case was reopened in 2018. Recently, the Marshals have also posted photos of the three fugitives, in the hope that the public will help find them, always if they are still alive.
According to estimates, Clarence Anglin, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for robbing a bank in Alabama, should be 91 years old today. His brother John must be 92 years old. While Morris, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison for a robbery in Louisiana, must be 96 years old.
Authorities believe Morris was the organizer of the escape, as guards have always rated him as the smartest of the three. He met the Anglin brothers in a prison in Atlanta and the three were later transferred to Alcatraz, which was believed to be an impassable fortress. Whether the three men succeeded or not remains a mystery.
