UNESCO seeks state authority for management of Butrint

Researcher Auron Tare has published a letter UNESCO has addressed to the Ministry of Culture, urging it to be made aware of the state authority that will manage Butrint.

In response, Tare says, the Culture Ministry has told UNESCO that management will be carried out by a foundation.

"You can read that UNESCO seeks the list of the State Authority that will manage this UNESCO World Wealth. But who are the state authority? AADF CEO Professor Richard Hodges, an unrecognized heritage lawyer and Minister of Culture. Readers can judge for themselves on this issue. For the sake of public transparency it would be of interest to read the Foreign Ministry's response given to UNESCO," Tare writes.

This is not the only detail of the letters raising doubts that the form of management the Culture Ministry has chosen has not received UNESCO approval. The other detail relates that in the returned response UNESCO is told that the AADF, according to Tares, will invest $21 ml.

An investment of these sizes, the researcher says, would have an unrepairable impact on the archaeological area. The $21 ml figure does not mention anywhere in the agreement signed between the Ministry of Culture and AADF. It's only about $5 million.
