Police announced this Wednesday that one of those arrested for seizing a quantity of 45.5 kilograms of heroin was Egert Vargu, a customs agent, but also a Councilor in the Municipal Council of Tirana.

Everyone dealt with the amount of drugs seized, the fact that he was a municipal councilor, but very little, or no mention was made of the other even more important fact, that Vargu is a socialist elected and the list has already become long for representatives of this party is being caught as traffickers.

But, the irony is that the head of this councilor is neither less nor more, but the Deputy Minister of Interior, Romina Kuko. The latter has been chairing the Municipal Council for three years.

She has not been noticed in this position because in the absence of the opposition, the decisions pass without much debate and are often not even broadcast by the media.

Ms. Kuko, of course, has no legal responsibility that a member of the municipal council is a trafficker, but there is definitely a moral obligation as a deputy minister who has no prior information that one of the members of the council she heads is involved in international drug trafficking.

Her legal responsibility comes after the operation. As of 16:00 on Thursday, the City Council has had no reaction regarding this scandal nor has it taken any decision to remove a member who is already under arrest.

The lack of opposition has made Ms. Kuko's job easier, but such events require you to be up to the task and take swift and effective action, and the longer these measures are delayed, the more controversial Kuko's position at the helm becomes. City Council.
