“AlbaConcrete”

A serious accident that occurred on Wednesday afternoon on the outskirts of Tirana took the lives of two Egyptian citizens, 30 and 44 years old, who were employees of the "AlbaBeton" company.

The driver of an Audi vehicle was also injured in the serious collision, while authorities continue investigations to fully clarify the causes and circumstances of the incident.

Authorities confirmed that the victims were two Egyptian nationals.

The driver of the vehicle died at the scene, while the passenger died later in hospital, despite the intervention of doctors.

'Modern slavery' for foreign workers

Regarding the accident, sources from the investigation group told VoxNews that the driver, originally from Egypt, had proper documentation.

But the questions that arise are:

Did he have the correct license category for the vehicle (e.g. a concrete mixer requires the appropriate category)?

Was it a valid patent?

Did they have proper work and residence documentation?

The massive emigration of recent decades has transformed the demographic structure of Albania.

According to 2023 Census data, around 48% of the Albanian population lives abroad and the vast majority of this population is considered active for work, creating a deep labor force gap in the country – especially in the services sector.

The government has eased recruitment procedures for workers from countries poorer than Albania – such as Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines, and several African countries.

Foreign workers in Albania also face fraudulent recruitment, unfair labor practices, and being forced to perform jobs other than those for which they were recruited—abuses that are facilitated by the lack of action by police and immigration authorities.

Silence from the construction company and institutions:

According to the data provided, the two victims had come to Albania for employment reasons and were employed by the company "AlbaBeton", which operates in the construction sector.

From the data published in the " Open Corporates " database, it results that the company's shareholder structure includes Artan Dulaku, Adrian Dulaku, Genc Dulaku and Erjon Harizi.

The latter also holds the position of president of the Albanian Builders Association and is co-owner of the company "AlbaBeton".

The company "AlbaBeton" has not yet reacted regarding this serious incident which almost turned into a massacre.

The circumstances of the accident are still under investigation, and authorities have not yet released an official conclusion on the cause of the collision.

The "death" cycle

But about three years ago, another tragic accident occurred in the same place, with three fatalities and three injuries.

At that time, an "Audi" type vehicle broke through the road barriers and fell from the overpass onto the road axis below it, hitting another "Honda" type car.

As a result, the girls and boy who were in the Audi vehicle lost their lives.

The driver of the Audi and three other people on board the Honda vehicle were seriously injured.

The situation with road accidents remains problematic in the country.
