The re-election of Emmanuel Macron at the helm of France is a breath of fresh air for all those who feared that Marine Le Pen's victory would cause chaos in both domestic and foreign policy.
Although the centrist politician won the confidence of the majority of the French, the pro-European faces a second term by no means easy.
France remains a divided country and Macron is not a very popular figure, as shown by the high level of abstention in this election.
The 44-year-old will face some urgent challenges which are:
1- It needs a parliamentary majority.
2- Facing a divided electorate.
3- The ambition to reform the European Union.
4- Balancing role in the war in Ukraine.
5- Climate policies.
In June the country goes to a general election and the president needs a parliamentary majority to pursue his policies. The battle in June is expected to be difficult because besides Le Pen, who said that she will continue the battle, the challenger is also Jean-Luc Mélenchon from the extreme left, who also ran for president.
Macron has tried to appear a unifying figure of the Union.
A challenge for Emmanuel Macron are also the climate policies with which he tried to win over left-wing voters. The 44-year-old is now expected to be the president of all.
