Euphoria, Jose Mourinho's main Roma opponent

Jose Mourinho has sparked Roma's red half ahead of the start of the new Serie A season.

Rome has never been easy to conquer. Indeed, Rudi Garcia once stressed that the city has ever had only three kings: the Pope, a notorious 'Lebanese' crime boss, and Francesco Totti. Jose Mourinho, however, is on track to be declared fourth.

In the arc of a year, he electriified the red half of the city. His first season in Serie A was characterized by a series of ugly attacks on officials and opponents, but also noticeable progress on the pitch, culminating in the club winning its first major European trophy.

It may have only been the newly formed Europa Conference League, but it meant a lot to Mourinho, he floundered after their second semifinal win over Leicester City and even commemorated the triumph in Tirana with a new tattoo.

However, the 1-0 win over Feyenoord meant even more to fans. They had suffered greatly since Scudetto's last win in 2001, enduring mistakes and losses one after another, both in Serie A and continental competitions.

That is precisely why they hailed Mourinho as a Messiah, with hundreds of supporters coming out to greet him when he sensationally arrived in Rome last summer.

No one expected him to come. No one knew he was a contender to replace Paulo Fonseca on the way out as coach. The appointment of 'The Special One', then triggered what former Rome director Walter Sabatini described as an "emotional earthquake" in the Italian capital.

Paolo Di Canio's phone went off, the Lazio legend was flooded with messages from all his rome-supporting friends, who were overjoyed by the news. Di Canio, however, was ignoring, responding to a message labeling Mourinho "finished" and "the worst of the worst."

However, the thing is, Mourinho's methods are working again in Rome. Last season he improved the squad according to his schemes, while this summer he seems to have coughed it up.

As former Portugal midfielder Adrien Silva said of GOAL, "It's surprising in a sense, because Rome was having a very difficult time before he arrived. They were nowhere near the same level as their main rivals in Italy, but now they are getting closer and closer."

"But, on the other hand, it's not surprising that they're now doing well because it's Jose Mourinho! And he has shown in many clubs during his career that he is one of the best managers in the world. It just tells you that sometimes you just need the right manager at the right time for things to click," he says.

And Mourinho and Roma look like a clash conceived in paradise. Given the strength of the team that had finished seventh the season ago, expectations were low for the 2021-2022 season.

There were many dark days and Mourinho's disappointment was evident at regular intervals. He said he had matured, even as a coach as a man, but he began attacking old opponents (Juventus) in his first press conference and never regretted it as the season passed.

His main objective may have been the judges, but he was personally very involved in a very ugly and protracted feud with the training staff of Conference League opponents Bodo-Glymt.

However, Mourinho used his approach brilliantly. After ruthlessly removing players he did not need at the start of the season, he managed to unite the team. Fans, of course, have been behind him from the beginning. A mural of Mourinho in a Vespa appeared in Rome's Testaccio neighbourhood just days after his arrival.

The first result was the creation of a "family sensation" that led an average team to victory in the Conference League. The question now is whether Mourinho can now build on this seemingly unstoppable feeling, a Roma for a major title?

Fabio Capello, the man behind the 2000-01 title triumph, is among those who expect Rome to at least challenge for the top four this season. However, as the legendary coach recently pointed out, "The danger in Rome remains the same: much euphoria".

However, the ship captained Mourinho is on sailing. The success of the Conference League, coupled with a positive transfer window, has sparked an unparalleled wave of optimism among cheerleading, creating the same atmosphere as in 2001.

Images from Paulo Dybala's presentation have long gone viral, with the former Juventus striker left stunned by the reception at the Palazzo dela Civilta' Italiana.

He remained speechless again last week, only giving a small sign of approval instead, as a crowd of 65,000 Roma fans gave an exciting rendition of the club's anthem ahead of the pre-season friendly with Shakhtar Donetsk.

Dybala, Tammy Abraham, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Marcolo Zaniolo - 'The Fantastic Four' as they have already been baptized - combined perfectly in the first goal in a 5-0 win, which suggests Mourinho is now in possession of a team capable of being named claimant
