Goal.com analysis: Stop counting, Benzema has already won the Ballon d'Or
Benzema

Despite all the controversy and criticism it generates, the Ballon d'Or remains the most important individual award in world football, but the race to win the award in 2022 is practically over.

"France Football" announced in March that the rules for Ballon d'Or voting have changed. The main one is that the award will be based on performances over a single season, rather than a calendar year.

This means performances at the 2022 World Cup, which starts in November, will not be taken into account this year, as they will be judged when voting begins for the 2023 Ballon d'Or.

The importance of trophies won has also been reduced, meaning the award should reflect the best footballers from each season, rather than those who lift the most trophies.

The candidates for the 2022 award will be announced on Friday, but according to goal.com everything has been decided: Karim Benzema wins.

There is no competitor who comes close to the Frenchman in terms of impact in the 2021-22 season. He scored 48 goals and provided 15 assists. Won the Champions League, La Liga, UEFA Nations League and the Spanish Super Cup. Anyone who doesn't vote for Real's forwards must have a very strong and unsportsmanlike reason.

The rival with the best statistics is Sadio Mane, followed by Salah, fourth Robert Lewandowski.
