Local authorities in the city of Milan are proposing a new law to ban ice cream after midnight in a bid to protect residents' peace.

For many people a late night ice cream is part of the Italian culture, but this may not be possible anymore.

Covering around 12 districts, the proposal will ban pizza, ice cream and drinks after midnight in an attempt to control the rowdy groups of people who roam the streets of Milan at any time of the year, which seems to cause concern among locals keeping them awake until the wee hours of the morning.

"The goal is to seek a balance between entertainment, peace and tranquility of the residents," said Marco Granelli, vice mayor of Milan.

The proposal will come into force from the middle of next month and will last until November. The estimated opening hours start at 12.30pm on weekdays and 1.30am on weekends and public holidays, also removing tables outside bars and restaurants as a way to clear the streets of rowdy customers.

Citizens have until the beginning of May to appeal and suggest changes if they do not like this bill.

The proposal will come into effect from mid-May and will last until November.

This is not the first time that in Milan there is an attempt to ban ice cream after midnight.

In 2013, then-mayor Giuliano Pisapia tried to implement similar measures, but was forced to back down after a backlash.
