The Euro-Lek exchange rate has closed the week on an upward trend. According to the official exchange rate of the Bank of Albania, the Euro was exchanged on Friday for 91.97 Lekë, gaining approximately 0.5 Lekë compared to Thursday. This is the highest level of the Euro-Lek exchange rate in the last two weeks.

According to market agents, strong short-term increases in the Euro are generally related to specific operations of purchasing currency in large amounts.

The sudden increase in market demand is usually accompanied by a rapid daily appreciation of the Euro.

This is a phenomenon that has been observed several times in the exchange rate in recent years. However, this increase is usually short-term and is amortized by the market within a few days, precisely because it is associated with sporadic buying operations and does not usually reflect broad-based demand.

On the other hand, a slight upward correction of the exchange rate after the end of the summer season can be expected. This has been common in previous years, but usually the trend has started earlier, once the peak of the season has passed. This year the decline of the Euro has continued uninterrupted during September and a slight correction from the historical minimum levels of September can be expected in the future.

The Euro has continued its long-term downward trend in the exchange rate against the Lek throughout 2026, even at an even faster pace compared to last year. The annual decline in the exchange rate this month has reached close to the annual maximum level of 6%.

The statistics of the Bank of Albania showed a significant improvement in the Balance of Payments in the first half of this year. For the first 6 months of 2026, the current account deficit decreased, with a total value of 361 million euros or 40.6% less compared to the same period last year. The current account deficit for the first 6 months also marked the lowest level since 2018. The reduction in the deficit came mainly from the increase in exports of services and remittances.

The strong growth in foreign direct investment also appears to have had an additional effect on the overall balance. Bank of Albania data show that for the second quarter of 2026, the value of foreign direct investment reached 741 million euros, an increase of 86% compared to the same period a year earlier.

This growth was significantly influenced by flows related to a significant development project in the real estate sector. For the entire first 6 months, the total value of foreign direct investments reached 1.144 billion euros, an increase of 50% compared to the same period last year.

Also, an additional effect seems to have been exerted by the large fiscal surplus, which has reduced the supply of Lek in the market. For the 8-month period of 2026, the budget was in surplus at the value of 61.6 billion Lek, an increase of 52% compared to the same period a year earlier. (Monitor)
