Large fire in Tuscany, 3,000 residents evacuated

Italian firefighters are battling to extinguish a huge forest fire in Tuscany that has been burning for days, fanned by strong winds, forcing the evacuation of around 3,000 people.

The fire, active since Tuesday, has spread to over 800 hectares on Mount Faeta, which lies between the provinces of Lucca and Pisa, said the mayor of a neighboring town, San Giuliano Terme.

It is likely that this was provoked by the burning of olive prunings that got out of control, Matteo Cecchelli told public broadcaster RAI.

During the night, strong winds fanned the fire, prompting preliminary evacuations, Tuscany regional president Eugenio Giani said in a statement.

Three Canadair firefighting planes, which collect water from lakes, rivers or seas before dropping it on fires, were deployed to support staff on the ground, the national fire department in X said.

"The fire is still very active," Lucca's deputy mayor, Fabio Barsanti, said in a Facebook video.

"All efforts are being made to contain the perimeter of the fire as much as possible, but we cannot relax or make predictions because we are at the mercy of the wind," he said.
