A court in Sarajevo has sentenced Amir Zukic, a former senior official of the ruling party in Bosnia and Herzegovina, to three years in prison for corruption.

Zukic, former state deputy and general secretary of the Party for Democratic Action (SDA), the party that is currently in power, was found guilty of bribery and using political connections to give jobs to some people in state institutions in the year 2016.

The US State Department in 2020 barred Zukic from entering the United States for allegedly engaging in serious corruption.

On July 29, the Sarajevo court sentenced four more people to up to six years in prison, while freeing others.

Safet Bibič was sentenced to six years in prison, Senad Trako to one and a half years, Ramiz Karavdić to two years and Esad Xhananović to three years.

While Nexhad Trako and Asim Sarajlic, who is also on the US list for corruption, were acquitted of the charges.

Court decisions can be appealed.

The trial was part of Western-backed efforts to curb corruption in the Balkan country, which is struggling to recover economically from a devastating ethnic war in the 1990s.

The United States and its Western allies have imposed sanctions on individuals considered to be undermining the rule of law and stability in the Balkans./REL
