British scientist James Lovelock has passed away at the age of 103. Lovelock was born on July 26, 1919 in Letchworth Garden City in the United Kingdom. He is known as the environmental scientist and creator of the Gaia theory, which hypothesizes that the Earth acts as a single living organism.

Lovelock died on Tuesday "surrounded by his family on his 103rd birthday," his family said in a statement released to The Guardian and shared on social media.

"To the world, he was best known as a scientific pioneer, climate prophet and the originator of the Gaia Theory," the statement said. "To us, he was a loving husband and wonderful father with boundless curiosity, a mischievous sense of humor and a passion for nature."

Lovelock's family said that until six months ago, "he was still able to walk along the coast near his home in Dorset and attend interviews", but his health had recently deteriorated.

Everyone knows him as the father of Gaia, the theory that our planet can be described as a large, self-regulating living being, but James Ephraim Lovelock was much more. He began his research in medicine. He then developed several sensors for measuring air pollution that led to the discovery of the presence of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), the molecules responsible for the ozone hole (which were later banned by the industry). Some of his experiments have been used by NASA to search for life on Mars.

He has seen and experienced the advancement of science over the decades, always doing it as a free-lancer and breaking the mold. Even recently when he hypothesized a cybernetic future.

James Lovelock was one of the most influential scientists of our time. He worked for the British government during World War II, and later in the 1970s for NASA on the Viking mission to Mars. It was then that he was inspired to develop the Gaia hypothesis, the idea that the Earth is an interconnected, self-regulating system. In his new book Novacene: The Coming Age of Hyperintelligence, he argues that the "Anthropozoic Age" of human influence on the Planet is about to end and that another is about to begin, which will see superintelligent beings as protagonists.
