Japan has hanged Tomohiro Kato, also known as the "Akihabara killer", 14 years after he drove into the Akihabara technology center in a truck and killed 7 people and injured 7 others.

The Japanese Ministry of Justice announced that the execution was carried out at the detention center in Tokyo.

The 39-year-old Kato was sentenced to hang in 2011, although he carried out the massacre in June 2008. The event is one of the most tragic in Japan's history. Kato was arrested at the scene and confessed to authorities that he had gone to Akihabara to kill people, "it didn't matter who."

"This is a very painful case, which had very serious consequences and shocked society," said the justice minister, who also explained that Kato made "meticulous preparations" for the attack.
