The father of the cryptocurrency boss is taken hostage in Paris, the kidnappers

French police have managed to rescue the father of a wealthy cryptocurrency entrepreneur after he was taken hostage in search of reward. The man was kidnapped on Thursday morning in Paris, the prosecutor's office said.

"The victim turned out to be the father of a person who made his fortune in cryptocurrencies and the incident was accompanied by a ransom demand," the statement said, without giving their names or other details about their identities.

Police investigators found the hostage in a house in the Essonne region south of Paris, from which he was rescued on Saturday evening, the prosecutor's office said.

Authorities said he was treated for injuries but did not provide details. French media reported that the suspected hostage-takers cut off one of the man's fingers.

Police arrested five people, four were inside or near the house where the man was held captive, while the fifth was at the wheel of a vehicle thought to have been used for the suspected kidnapping, the prosecutor's office said.

The police investigation is reportedly looking into a number of possible criminal charges, including kidnapping "by torture or a barbaric act".

In January, police said a co-founder of French cryptocurrency firm Ledger, David Balland, was also abducted with his wife from their home in the Cher region of central France.

Police said they made 10 arrests and that the suspected kidnappers demanded a ransom in cryptocurrencies from another Ledger co-founder.

A raid by the elite unit of France's National Gendarmerie Intervention Group, which specializes in hostage situations, freed Balland the next day, and a day later he was released, again by the GIGN, his wife, found tied up in a vehicle, police said.
