A record heatwave was recorded in the United Arab Emirates in April, with the average maximum temperature reaching 42.6 degrees Celsius last month, something unprecedented in the last 20 years in the oil-rich Gulf country.

The highest average maximum temperature ever recorded in April was 42.2 degrees Celsius in 2017, according to a calculation based on data provided to the French News Agency (AFP) by the National Meteorological Center, whose data dates back to 2003.

The country has been experiencing unusually hot weather for the season for several days, prompting authorities to issue recommendations to the population, urging citizens, among other things, to drink plenty of water and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day.

These conditions are explained by thermal depressions coming from the desert and which "cause a very hot air mass, which is called the South Wind," explained Ahmed Habib, meteorologist at the National Center for Meteorology.

The mercury reached 46.6 degrees on April 27 in the emirate of Fujairah, the second highest temperature ever recorded in April in the country, after a record of 46.9°C in April 2012.

In contrast, the same month last year was marked by record rainfall. These rains, unprecedented in the last 75 years, caused the death of four people and paralyzed the city of Dubai for many days.
