Anthony Albanese, the Prime Minister of Australia, triumphed in the parliamentary elections, considered a key moment for the country's current politics.

Preliminary voting results favor Albanese (whose father was an Arbëresh from Italy) and the Labor Party led by Albanese, although it is not yet known whether he has managed to secure the majority needed to form the new government alone.

This uncertainty, the BBC emphasizes, leaves open the possibility of negotiations with other political forces, including small parties and independent candidates, to create a governing coalition.

Initial data suggests that Labor has managed to benefit from a significant shift in voters at the national level, gaining broad support in several key areas and leaving behind the conservative Liberal-National coalition, led by Peter Dutton.

While the counting is not yet complete, Albanese looks set to become the first prime minister to win a second term since John Howard in 2004.

The opposition has already admitted defeat.

"We were not good enough during this campaign," said Dutton, who added that he takes full responsibility for this fact.

The 62-year-old Albanese has presented himself as a man with an "iron fist" to lead Australia through a period of global turbulence, further compounded by Donald Trump's tariff war.

The latter's former campaign manager, Chris LaCivita - considered one of the architects of the Republican's triumph in the 2024 US presidential election - claimed two days ago that he had made an unofficial visit to Australia to advise the Liberal Party there before the vote, but Dutton himself, who lost the election, had denied his involvement.
