Eight men have been arrested in two separate counter-terrorism investigations in the UK, including an alleged plot to attack a specific venue in the country.
Five people were arrested on Saturday in an operation led by the Metropolitan Police, in coordination with Manchester and Wiltshire forces, as part of a pre-planned investigation into the preparation of a terrorist act.
Four of the detainees are Iranian citizens – two 29-year-olds, one 40-year-old and one 46-year-old – while investigations are ongoing into the identity and nationality of the fifth person.
Meanwhile, three other Iranian men were arrested in London on Saturday in a separate counter-terrorism operation. Authorities say the two investigations are unrelated.
Suspected target: a specific venue in England
Police confirmed that in the first case, the arrests are related to a suspected plan to attack a specific venue, the name of which was not made public, but was notified and is being supported by law enforcement.
"The investigation is still in the early stages. We are examining a number of leads to understand the motive and to ensure there is no further risk to the public," said Commander Dominic Murphy from the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command.
Authorities warn: Stay vigilant
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper thanked the security services for their swift action and added: "These are serious events that demonstrate the need for a sustained and tailored response to threats to national security."
In the first operation, four men were arrested under the Terrorism Act, while one was arrested under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act.
In the second operation, three men aged 39, 44 and 55 were arrested under the National Security Act.
