“I hope this episode teaches Catholics who support Trump that voting for a narcissist is never a good idea.”
If the head of the White House has also lost George Weigel, with his attack on Pope Leo, he should really start worrying about the sustainability of his electorate on the eve of the midterm elections in November.
This is because the senior researcher at the Ethics and Public Policy Center is anything but a hardened liberal and, on the contrary, should represent the Catholic public interested in Donald's positions, at least in terms of social conservatism.
Weigel was the biographer of Pope John Paul II, practically living in the Apostolic Palace while preparing his book “Witness to Hope.” Along with Michael Novak and Richard John Neuhaus, he formed the trio of American intellectuals who constituted the point of reference in the United States for the pontificate of the Polish pope and later of Pope Benedict XVI.
Attitudes became more complex with Pope Francis. Simplification is always dangerous, especially when it comes to theology, but in this case you are not wrong if you think that, in theory, a Republican presidency could have built a fruitful dialogue with this part of American Catholicism, which voted for him in the majority, but Donald managed to drive him away.
What did you think when you read the message against Pope Leo published by the head of the White House?
"President Trump's posts on the Truth social network are shameful, scandalous and offensive. The Pope's response during his flight to Africa shows how an adult should respond to such stupidity."
The White House chief followed up the message by posting an image of himself as Jesus, which even many supporters of the Maga movement have considered blasphemous. What do you think?
"What should I think? It seems like a gesture that speaks for itself."
Everyone is wondering why Trump decided to launch this attack against the first American Pope right now, and many suspect it is an attempt to distract attention from the problems he is facing in the war in Iran. What do you think is the reason?
"All of this has happened because Trump is completely undisciplined and has no one around him to protect him from his worst instincts. And this is a general problem that applies to everything, not just the offensive message he has decided to publish against the Pope."
Maybe he thought that the transition from Francis to Leo would bring the Catholic Church closer to his presidency, from immigration to war?
“As I said after the election of Prevost, I think these divisions have been exaggerated, especially by the Italian media. The living body of the Church in the United States is quite divided, but the bishops are almost unanimously united. The faithful are happy about the appointment of Leo, who nevertheless lived almost his entire adult life abroad, between Latin America and Rome. It is not that Chicago has taken over the See of Peter, but this international experience strengthens his profile as a Pope who by nature has a global mission.”
Even Pope John Paul II had opposed the invasion of Iraq, sending Cardinal Laghi to the White House to convince Bush not to attack, but he had never stooped so low. What impact will this case have in the run-up to the midterm elections in November?
"I hope this episode serves as a lesson to Catholics who support Trump that voting for a narcissist is never a good idea. All presidents have a strong ego, but narcissism is a serious flaw for anyone who has to lead a country . "/ La Repubblica
