The shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner took place at the Washington Hilton Hotel on Connecticut Avenue, the same one where Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded in 1981.

The attack occurred on March 30, 1981, when the perpetrator, John Hinckley Jr., shot Reagan as he walked to his limousine after an event inside the hotel.

Reagan survived, but was seriously injured by a bullet that ricocheted off the presidential limousine and struck him in the torso, breaking a rib and damaging a lung. He was rushed to George Washington University Hospital, from where he was discharged on April 11.

Then-White House press secretary James Brady was injured in the same attack, along with a Secret Service agent and a Washington Metropolitan Police officer.

Brady suffered brain damage in the incident and was left disabled for the rest of his life. His injuries haunted him throughout his life and contributed to his death in 2014.

A year later, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of mental disorder, but was held in a high-security section of St. Elizabeths Hospital until his release in 2016.

A memorial plaque still marks the site of the shooting on the side of the hotel.
