Europeans must rely on themselves and defend their interests because the United States, China and Russia are now all "totally against" them, French President Emmanuel Macron warned, Politico reports.

"We should not underestimate the fact that this is a unique moment in which the American president, the Russian president and the Chinese president are all going together against the Europeans. That is why this is the right moment to wake up," Macron said in a conversation with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who hosted the Kathimerini newspaper in Athens.

"We need to believe in ourselves a little more and implement our agenda," he added.

Macron also stressed that he expects tensions with the US to continue even after President Donald Trump leaves office.

"This is a historical trend," he said and continued:

"We can cooperate with the Americans on some issues, which still makes sense because of shared values and historical ties, but I really believe that this American approach will last."

He explained that the main difference between Trump's first and second terms is that many European countries thought for the first time that it was a deviation that would pass and therefore it was not necessary to change anything fundamentally.

"Now many colleagues are much clearer. After so many years, we say: well, we have to react. We have to act as Europeans, be more united and defend our interests. For me, this is the right way," he said.

Macron arrived in Athens after an informal European Council meeting in Cyprus, as Greece and France signed a renewal of their bilateral security agreement.

It is about extending the pact from 2021, which includes a clause on mutual defense and the obligation of Greece to buy French warships worth at least three billion euros. The new agreement is extended for another five years with automatic extension, and provides for cooperation in foreign policy, civil protection and the economy.
