Ukraine's Foreign Minister has responded to French President Emmanuel Macron after the latter said it was vital that Russia was not humiliated for its occupation. Macron said it was important for President Vladimir Putin to have a way out of what he called a "fundamental mistake."
But Dmytro Kuleba said allies should "focus better on how to put Russia in its place" as it "humiliates itself".
Macron has repeatedly spoken to Putin by telephone in an attempt to mediate a ceasefire and negotiations. French efforts to maintain a dialogue with the Kremlin leader are at odds with the positions of the US and the UK.
Foreign Minister Kuleba said in a Twitter post that "calls to avoid humiliating Russia can only humiliate France and any other country that would do so."
Kiev says Russia should not take territorial concessions from Ukraine, as the Russian occupation has been internationally condemned as brutal aggression.
Earlier, Macron told French regional media that the Russian leader was "isolated". "I think, and I told him, that he made a historic and fundamental mistake for his people, for himself and for history," said the French president.
"Isolating yourself is one thing, but being able to get out of it is a difficult path," he added.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has lined up with Macron, suggesting that Europe wants "some credible negotiations".
